Wisconsin field days report

9 Aug

The Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers association had their summer field days at Owen Rock Cranberry in Hancock yesterday.  During a summer of record heat and drought, we had a nice cool 70′s day with the threat of rain, which eventually came.  Whoda thunk?  Most the growers I talked to are looking at a good crop.  Not the best ever, not the worst.  I remember back three years ago to the same time and the thoughts for a huge crop and then….rot showed its ugly self.  Hot and dry usually means a great crop, but this year, who knows?  In Wisconsin we started growing them in early April.  Hard to know what is going to happen in October, but so far, so good.  Talk also turned to price and the result of the last Ocean Spray auction has many discouraged about prices…they seem to have stalled, if not ticked down a bit.  With talk of a good, solid crop, handlers seem happy with their prospects for a big  crop and are acting exactly like we would if we knew we had, say, our fuel prices locked in for a year.  We wouldn’t be looking around to pay more if we didn’t need more gas.  Simple fact.
